The Mouth Body Connection - Sugar

We all know frequent sugar causes decay. A recent article in the “Advertiser “27/7/13 stated that food high in sugar, such as cereals and sweetened yoghurts, can also make us fat and prone to long term illness. These foods increase our risk of diabetes, cause us to age faster and sap our energy levels and often lead to obesity. The average Australian consumes 53kg of sugar per year or 29 teaspoons a day according to health fund NIB.

These are sugars found in our confectionary, soft drinks, energy and protein drinks, flavoured milks, juices, cakes and other baked goods. Nutritionist, Ms Alwill, likened our dependency on sugar to drug addiction, with each hit only feeding a craving temporarily before the body screams out for more. “Once we have the taste of sugar, we tend to crave more of it. We do not feel satiated by a sugar hit, whereas a smaller portion of good quality fat coming form raw nuts and seeds, natural nut spreads, healthy oils from avocados, coconut, flaxseed and olives, fresh fatty fish or full-fat organic dietary products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt give our bodies far more satisfaction and offer a diverse range of nutrients”
