Dental Health Week 5-11 August 2013

This year the ADA are focusing on Young Adults, 18-30 years. These are people we may have treated since they were children and helped them to achieve oral health. Then what happens? They leave school, start University or a new job. They might leave home which means parents are no longer guiding their choices and reminding them to keep dental appointments. Their diet changes, they discover alcohol and possibly drugs.

What are the issues for young adults? If you are 18-30 and have any concerns, speak to one of our dentists or hygienists.

The ADA Inc states we have all seen the impact poor diet and oral hygiene have on the dentition and the oral cavity. There are other lifestyle factors which impact on the oral health of young adults.

  • Dental Caries
  • Tooth erosion, especially from soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks
  • Oral piercings, including lip and tongue piercings
  • Smoking, periodontal disease and oral cancer
  • Alcohol and its oral impacts including violence and dental trauma
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and its links to oro-pharyngeal cancer
  • Drug use, eg, “Meth Mouth”
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Overseas travel and dental emergencies
  • Dental tourism
